FoE Local Env Data Local environmental data

Local environmental data tool - data sets

We have a Local environment data tool, which provides local environmental data for all Local authorities, Westminster Constituencies and Mayoral regions across England and Wales.

The tool allows users to enter a postcode and choose to explore local data by local authority, constituency or - if applicable - mayoral region.

The data that underpins the tool is available for download below for all geographical areas included in the tool.

FoE Green Jobs Energy

Onshore renewable energy potential

These datasets contain the outputs of our onshore renewable energy modelling, which maps the priority areas for potential onshore renewable energy installations. They also include the exclusion layers showing which areas of the country were excluded from this mapping and why.

The data was used to inform this research: Release our wind: Tremendous renewable energy potential in England

The exclusion maps are experimental and slow to load, so we recommend using a laptop with a good internet connection for best performance.

FoE Bus Transport

When this section is complete, these datasets will contain spatial data covering transport infrastructure, emissions, public transport access and active travel (when complete).

Bus service frequency 2010-2023: Geographical summaries and Neighbourhood data (LSOA)

Data below reports on the daytime average trips per hour (TPH) between 6am-10pm. A spreadsheet provides aggregated summaries of this data for the following geographical areas:

Also included is a download link to the data at neighbourhood-level (LSOA11) detailing the daytime average trips per hour (TPH) in each LSOA in 2010 and in 2023 and the changes in services during that time period.

This data was used to inform our story on the decline in bus services, which includes an interactive map: How Britains bus services have drastically declined

FoE car Pollution

These datasets will cover air pollution and water issues, industrial sites and environmental justice indicators (when complete).

Air Pollution in England and Wales by LSOA

Our air pollution data analysis story includes an interactive map: Which neighbourhoods have the worst air pollution

LSOA neighbourhood-level air pollution data

You can download air pollution data for nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and particulate matter (PM2.5) by LSOAs below. Our previous work presented a 3-year average for 2021 to 2023 at LSOA 2011 boundaries. Our latest update (October 2025) presents 2022 to 2024 3-year averaged annual pollution data for the updated LSOA 2021 boundaries.

We’ve made the data available as csv files, which can be opened in Excel or in GIS software and joined to LSOA boundaries to make your own maps. We’ve also added a GeoPackage download, which can be opened directly in GIS software. Note: this uses “Super Generalised” LSOA boundaries to reduce the file size but may not have the level of detail you want.

Air pollution data summarised by regions, local authorities and constituencies

We’ve also summarised this data by Wales and English Regions, Local authority districts and Westminster Constituencies, counting the number of LSOA neighbourhoods in each region that are above World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines and twice WHO guidelines, and including statistics on schools, child population, car ownership and ethnic minority population in neighbours which exceed these thresholds. This geographical summary data can be downloaded below.

FoE Watch Climate risks and extreme weather

These datasets map locations most at risks from extreme weather.

Flood risk in England

In February 2026, we published a data story for flooding risk in England: Is flooding in England getting worse?.

For this research, we analysed and identified properties at risk of flooding from rivers and seas, and properties at risk of flooding from surface water (i.e. flash flooding), using two separate flood risk extent maps published by the Environment Agency and property locations. We then estimated which of these properties were domestic (i.e. homes) and the population at risk and identified neighbourhoods with a high proportion of homes at risk. Finally, we joined socio-demographic data to identify which of the high flood risk neighbourhoods are also likely to be the least resilient to preparing, coping with and recovering from flooding.

This data was mapped at LSOA21 neighbourhoods. You can download this data below as a csv file or geopackage to make your own maps using GIS software. For the geopackage, we’ve used ‘Super-Generalised’ LSOA boundaries files to keep the file size manageable. (If you want higher resolution maps, we’d suggest downloading the csv file and joining to full extent LSOA21 boundaries available for download from the ONS Geoportal.)

Heat risk and enhanced exposure in England

We’ve identified the areas in England most exposed to extreme heat using satellite-measured land surface temperature (LST) and modelled air temperature captured during the 2022 heatwaves. Within these most exposed neighbourhoods, we’ve collected data on the number of care homes, nurseries and hospitals. We’ve also combined this with joined socio-demographic data to identify which of the high heat neighbourhoods are also the least likely to be able to preparing, be most impacted (e.g. in terms of health) and to recover from heatwaves. The data was aggregated to 2021 MSOA boundaries.

See our research for further info, including the methodology and data sources for the analysis: Which neighbourhoods are most vulnerable to heatwaves

Download the heat data by MSOA level below, as a csv file or a geopackage to make your own maps using GIS software. For the geopackage, we’ve used ‘Super-Generalised’ MSOA boundaries files to keep the file size manageable. (If you want higher resolution maps, we’d suggest downloading the csv file and joining to full extent MSOA21 boundaries available for download from the ONS Geoportal.)
